• Hundreds of new students admitted into Obong University, Obong Ntak in Akwa Ibom state for the 2014/2015 academic session have been charged to imbibe the core virtues of hard work, discipline and unfettered dedication to their studies in order to excel in their academic pursuit and contribute meaningfully to providing workable solutions to some pressing challenges facing the nation.

    The Vice Chancellor of Obong University, Prof. Udoudo Ekanemesang who gave the charge on Friday during the 8th Matriculation ceremony of the institution, called on the students to take optimum advantage of the existing conducive environment for teaching and learning complemented by a team of dedicated staff of lecturers and administrators in the institution to further their pursuit for valuable knowledge that will ensure their success in academics and their chosen careers after graduation.

    Prof. Ekanemesang advised the new students eschew cultism, truancy, plagiarism and other vices capable of posing serious threats to the realization of their primary objective of seeking admission into the University, even as he re-echoed the avowed resolve of the Management of Obong University to continue in its current practice of embarking on laudable initiatives and policies that will foster the delivery of qualitative higher education to its students.

    In his words “Here, we give our students the tools with which they can work on their own in quest of knowledge and to create new knowledge. Obong University seeks to educate students broadly for a life of moral and spiritual integrity, personal and social responsibility and a continuous quest for wisdom.

    As a student in Obong University you must consciously seek to change for the better. In manners you must become more refined, in knowledge you must have acquired fundamental principles which will make it possible for you to be successful in your chosen career and make your approach to life problems and challenges, realistic.

    Continuing, the Vice Chancellor noted “Your critical thinking and analytical faculties must be developed; you must be able to tolerate and consider the viewpoints of other people. Choose your friends carefully – avoid irresponsible behaviours – drugs, cultism, and alcoholism are not tolerated; take your Matriculation Oath seriously.
    Ask questions in and outside of class; take part in their research. Seek help when you need one – it is a sign of strength to ask for help. Obong University seeks to develop in you bold entrepreneurial spirit – think big, think outside the box – you can do what had previously been considered impossible”.

    While congratulating the matriculating students for scaling through the hurdles of the admission process, Professor Ekanemesang also announced plans by the University to get the approval from the National Universities Commission, (NUC) for the introduction of seven new programmes – Political Science, International Relations, Business Administration, Sociology, Peace and Conflict Management, Public Administration and Marketing, in the first semester of the 2015/2016 session.

    High-point of the ceremony was the administration of matriculation oath on the over 200 freshmen admitted into various departments in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, as well as Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences.
